Greenbulb Energy Completes RTG Crane Modernization Project at Penang Port

Greenbulb Energy is proud to announce the successful completion of an 8-unit Rubber Tyred Gantry (RTG) crane control system upgrade at Penang Port Sdn. Bhd. (PPSB) .

The project focused on modernising critical crane control systems to improve operational reliability, safety, and long-term maintainability . All works were completed ahead of the planned schedule , with minimal impact to port operations.

Each RTG was upgraded through a carefully phased execution plan, followed by comprehensive testing and operational handover. The upgraded cranes are now fully operational and supported under a structured warranty and technical support programme.

Project Scope and Key Works

The scope of work included:

Replacement of legacy PLC systems with Siemens S7-1500 PLC
Installation of Siemens SINAMICS S120 drive systems for hoist, gantry, trolley, and line module applications
Upgrade of HMI systems for improved operability and diagnostics
Integration of PROFIBUS and PROFINET communication , including fiber optic OLM
Drive parameterization, PLC program loading, and system fine-tuning
Comprehensive testing, commissioning, endurance testing , and operational handover

Besides Malaysia and Indonesia, the company has the indochina markets on its radar. "The market is booming. There is demand for our proprietary expertise, which is at par, if not better than our foreign counterparts and our price is way more competitive," he says.

Asked if there are other opportunities that are viable in port operations for Greenbulb besides crane operations, Low says since it is a niche market, the company will be focusing on the trends of going into remote operations. "Our next challenge is to decouple the drivers from the crane itself, put them in a centralised control room to operate the machine remotely. From here, we see opportunities largely in a new devices, servers and software exploitation. This should keep our hands full for the next five years," says Low.

Established in 2016, Greenbulb Energy Sdn Bhd specialises in crane modernisation, upgrade and automation for seaports and power plants across the Asia Pacific. Greenbulb Energy is the first and only in-house design team for proprietary cranes solutions in Malaysia.

In January 2020, Greenbulb Energy further strengthened its track record when it was awarded a turnkey crane upgrading project for Manila Port – the largest domestic port in the Philippines and owned by San Miguel Corporation.

Adventurous businessman Andy Low reveals why he took a business risk with his green technology solutions turnkey company, Greenbulb Energy

When engineer Andy Low launched Greenbulb Energy , a turnkey company specialised in modernising port cranes in 2014, he knew that he was taking a huge gamble by leaving a secure job behind for this endeavour.

A lifelong lover of extreme sports, he associates the ups and downs in business to a personal hobby of his—mountain biking, which he once attempted in Tagaytay, the Philippines.

“I encountered a steep uphill climb that really pushed me to my limit. I thought that was the toughest part until I came upon another narrow path, this time downhill at high speed. It was terrifying and exhilarating at the same time, but it taught me that nothing uncomfortable lasts forever,” recalls this soft-spoken managing director of Greenbulb Energy.

When asked his plans for the next five years, the forward-thinking Low says: “We hope to take the lead in moving port automation as we believe this is how ports will operate in the future.”

Low also has a big dream of owning a port of his own one day, powered by green energy.

“Owning a port makes business sense. More than 97 per cent of global manufactured goods are transported via sea and Malaysia’s port is ranked in the top 20 globally. I know Greenbulb can add value and impact to Malaysian businesses that are sourcing for green logistics solutions,” says the fearless entrepreneur.
